Contact Lenses in Pediatrics Study in Singapore

Abstract: A high proportion of Singaporean children requiring vision correction are able to successfully wear daily disposable soft CLs over a 3-month period. Overall, slit lamp findings showed the prevalence of corneal staining in this study to be 21% at 3 months, which is lower than that previously reported in adults, but higher than that reported in the US Contact Lenses in Pediatrics study (6%).

“…It should be noted that a study that involved the use of low Dk soft contact lenses during a 3-month period in Singaporean children aged 8 to 11 years on a daily disposable basis did not report any infiltrative events. 33 And a multicenter retrospective chart review of 3549 soft contact lens wearers for significant infiltrative and inflammatory events found that use of soft contact lenses in young patients aged 8 to 15 years was associated with a lower risk of events compared with teens and young adults. 34 Whatever the mechanism, the low incidence, the asymptomatic nature of the majority of infiltrates, and the mild nature of the condition are promising for the use of daily wear contact lenses in children.…”

“…19 Also, importantly, evidence suggests that contact lenses may play a significant role in controlling the progression of myopia. 1013 Despite the utility of contact lenses in children, there exists a general perception that contact lenses are not suitable for use in children.…”

“…In fact, older children/adolescents have more myopia (Czepita et al, 2007;Holguin et al, 2006;Murthy et al, 2002). A main reason reported for dissatisfaction with spectacles is the preference of not wearing them or using contact lenses (Li et al, 2009;Walline et al, 2005;Yawn et al, 1998), even when researchers used fashionable glasses (Zeng et al, 2009). This dislike is found crossculturally, although there are cultural differences in the reasons for noncompliance (Congdon et al, 2008;Wedner et al, 2008).…”

“…[1][2][3][4] A comparison of SCL fittings for children (8 to 11 years) and teens (13 to 17 years) demonstrated an increase in the time required to train SCL application and removal. 5 However, once trained, children were equally adept at lens application and removal and their lens wear schedules were similar to the teenage group.…”
