Contact toxicity of insecticides for attract‐and‐kill applications against adult Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Abstract: Effective attract-and-kill surfaces can be developed for killing IMM males and thereby potentially lead to reduced reproduction and, ultimately, population suppression.

“…This has also been shown for many other pyrethroids tested on other insects (Williams et al 1983, Jain and Yadav 1989, Nayak et al 2002, Campos and Phillips 2010. For example, cypermethrin and permethrin were found to have long-term toxic effects for up to 33 wk against T. castaneum on plywood (Watters et al 1983).…”

“…EfÞcacy of the acetamiprid ϩ bifenthrin mixture on plywood coated with latex paint was low in both the short-term and multiple residual experiments. Latex paint has been found to reduce the efÞcacy of some materials (Burkholder andDicke 1966, Campos andPhillips 2010), and differential efÞcacy on surfaces has often been inßuenced by the insecticide formulation (Burkholder and Dicke 1966, Kaufman and Rutz 2001, Arthur 2008. The high efÞcacy of acetamiprid ϩ bifenthrin on other surfaces and the high efÞcacy of bifenthrin alone on painted wood suggest that the reduced efÞcacy of acetamiprid ϩ bifenthrin on painted wood is as a result of the formulation rather than the active ingredients.…”

“…The attract-and-kill technique kills mobile insects by using pheromone to lure them to the insecticide surfaces. Movement on insecticide-treated surfaces in 2 s can suppress P. interpunctella males over 80% for up to 8 weeks [143]. Under hermetic storage conditions, the non-mobile developmental stages generally took more exposure time to reach a 100% mortality than the mobile stages because of their lower O 2 consumption and metabolic rate [144].…”
