Contact urticaria with anaphylactic reactions caused by occupational exposure to iridium salt

Abstract: This paper presents the case of a non-smoking and non-atopic male, exposed to iridium chloride at work, who developed respiratory tract symptoms and contact urticaria. Application of iridium salt to normal skin caused contact urticaria. An iridium chloride prick test showed a positive reaction and a scratch test produced anaphylactoid reactions. Platinum salt allergy was excluded through prick testing with hexachloroplatinate solution. There is no previous report describing a case where an individual has a pos… Show more

“…Another potentials ource of toxicityt hat arises from the SABRE technique is the iridium catalyst itself. Whilst some data on the adverse effectso fi ridiums alts has been reported [9] , little information is known abouto rgano-iridium complexes. [10] Therefore, we present at horough investigation into the potential toxicity of the metal catalyst in conjunctionw iths olvent and substrate effects.…”

“…Cutaneous allergic vasculitis following injection of indium 113m has been reported (19). Subjective symptoms on occupational exposure to iridium chloride have been described (20). A method to establish the qualitative composition of the dental alloys used has been developed (8), which will facilitate further studies of possible side-effects of dental alloys.…”

“…9,13 Reactions to platinum and iridium have been reported, largely limited to industrial workers with chronic exposure in recycling centers processing catalytic converters. 1,5,12 Testing should include evaluation for immediate and delayed hypersensitivity through skin prick and patch testing, respectively. 39 In our patient the reaction involved the entire length of the electrode within the spinal canal and was not isolated to the area around the contacts.…”
