Metals have come to the fore among the pollutants monitored in aquatic ecosystems in recent years. Fresh waters especially constitute a "hot spot" due to their limited reserves. In order to analyze the sources of metal-induced pollution, ecological risk level and pollutants of the Sarıçay River passing through the city of Çanakkale, sediment samples were collected from 26 stations and element analyses were carried out in ICP-MS. Anthropogenic effects and the risks they cause were determined by calculating the enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, and potential ecological risk from the obtained data. Anthropogenic enrichment was detected for Cr, Ni, Pb, Au, Ag and Ba, Bi, Tl, Na, Zn, Mg, K, As, Sb, and Mn with the largest amount being Cd. The level of enrichment varies from moderate to very high. According to the results of risk analysis, a moderate risk for Cd was determined and a very high risk for Ni and Pb. Agricultural activities, atmospheric deposition and mineral deposits in the basin were identified as the major sources from the multivariate statistical analysis performed to determine the main sources of metal inflows.

Monitoring key soil and vegetation attributes in mining areas under environmental rehabilitation is essential to ensure that the intervention techniques are effective. There are several approaches to monitoring mining areas and their integration is necessary to process large amounts of information. Thus, this study aimed to (i) assess soil multi‐contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTE) and human health risks; (ii) obtain a soil quality index with soil fertility data; (iii) calculate spectral index; (iv) show rehabilitation status based on vegetation attributes, and (v) compile these indices in a single measure. Four tailings' ponds (TPs), two waste piles (WPs), and an area of native forest from a gold mine in the Carajás National Forest were evaluated. Soil quality and vegetation cover are good in forest areas, with no evidence of PTE contamination. On the other hand, the TPs have poor fertility and vegetation cover, as well as higher levels of PTE. Human health risk indices obtained for all PTE were lower than 1, indicating a low risk to human health. The results of integrating the different indices suggest that the environmental conditions of the WPs are better than those of the TPs, which are still far from the environmental conditions of native areas. Soil attributes and vegetation development in TPs areas could be enhanced by the incorporation of organic materials and fertilizers and by planting species with phytoremediation potential. Finally, the integrative approach of the different indices proved to be useful in assessing the rehabilitation progress of the areas.

El presente documento tiene como objetivo discutir y analizar los efectos de la contaminación del agua y suelo producto de los residuos de relaves mineros. La actividad económica se basa principalmente en la explotación de los minerales, siendo exclusivos el oro y el uranio. En dichas actividades mineras es imposible la degradación de los desechos provenientes de los relaves, los mismos que contaminan los suelos, aguas superficiales, subterráneas y por ende en los ecosistemas tanto terrestres, como marinos y sus productos a consumir, como los peces y productos agrícolas, en detrimento de la salud de las poblaciones aledañas a las mineras. La presencia de elementos químicos y su alta toxicidad de sus componentes agrava su peligrosidad y su potencial como generador de impactos contaminantes en la salud de las personas y que sufran alteraciones altamente nocivas. Se revisaron 52 artículos arbitrados e indexados de las bases de datos Scopus y Scielo entre los años 2017 al 2020, los efectos de la contaminación del agua y suelo producto de los residuos de relaves mineros. Se concluye que los relaves mineros y el impacto medioambiental ante un proyecto de minería es inevitable, sobretodo en la degradación de los suelos, aguas superficiales, subterráneas y el aire. Esta contaminación provoca la presencia de elementos, minerales y metaloides, que originan perturbaciones en los modos de vida de las poblaciones humanas. Es necesaria la promulgación de las normas que puedan regular e impedir que la contaminación de los relaves siga afectando a la población y al medio ambiente. Finalmente esta revisión ha permitido percibir la necesidad de mayor información que si bien puede existir, existe una urgencia imperiosa del estudio sobre el impacto de contaminación de los relaves mineros sobre la salud humana y ecosistémica.
