Multifaceted Disparities Associated with Translator Earnings: A Quantitative Study of Upwork Profiles

This study aims to quantitatively explore the multifaceted determinants that influence earnings in the translation industry. Using a dataset comprising 45 000 translator profiles, the study focusses on delineating disparities correlated with demographic variables such as age, gender, home country wealth, and language pairs. The study uses a random forest regression model to delineate the complex interaction between gender, the economic standing of a translator's domicile country, age, and linguistic proficiency, as they relate to earnings. Our findings substantiate and, in many ways, extend existing qualitative and anecdotal evidence that has shaped the discourse in this sector. The rigorous empirical framework employed here can be replicated or adapted to study other sectors within the gig economy, thus contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of labour dynamics in the digital age.

Background: Subtitles are produced through different workflows and technologies: from fully automatic to human in open source web editors or in-house platforms, and increasingly through hybrid human-machine interaction. There is little agreement regarding subtitle copyright beyond the understanding that it is a derivative work. While same language verbatim subtitles may have little room for creativity, interlingual subtitling is heavily dependent on the subtitler skills to translate, prioritise, and condense information. These days creative subtitles are increasingly being used as one more aesthetic element in audiovisual narrative. Though they may be in the same language, the visual attributes that contribute to the narrative development make creative subtitles one more element that should be acknowledged and copyright protected. Methods: The paper will present a short introduction to subtitling copyright. It will then describe centralised and decentralised copyright management — where blockchain technology can be applied to aid subtitler identification. A focus group with expert professional subtitlers was organised, and feedback is reported. Conclusions: Subtitle copyright is country dependent, still subtitling working practices and media asset distribution have no geographical borders. Blockchain technology -as a concept- could aid subtitle traceability. This can be useful beyond financial and moral right management and work towards media sustainability, allowing for reuse and repurpose of existing media assets.

Exploring Localization Translation Strategy under Cultural Compatibility Principle

In the context of globalization, multiculturalism is intertwined, and the importance of localization services is increasing. This paper observes the development of localization, analyzes different types of texts by referring to localized translation practices, and seeks localized translation strategies from the perspective of cultural compatibility. Results find that 1) the goal of localization is to integrate and expand into the target market, thus domestication should be the main translation strategy. 2) Given that source language products have many linguistic symbols that contain cultural connotations, the strategy of foreignization is also essential. Therefore, the contribution of this paper inspires translators wisely combine the translation strategies that of domestication and foreignization when translate, considering user's psychological acceptance and aesthetic orientation.
