Abstract. Architectural acoustics of contemporary sacred buildings is still an under-appreciated issue. Many contemporary churches are not functional enough due to acoustic defects which occur there. The study discusses issues of the modern Catholic church, where acoustic problems surface as high reverberant noise levels. The building under investigation, i.e. the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is the biggest contemporary church in Poznań, Poland, as its internal volume amounts to 16,800 m³. On the basis of in situ investigations, a computer model of the church was built and a series of simulations were carried out to determine correct treatment in order to achieve satisfactory acoustic conditions. The main assumption was to find such a solution as not to affect the modernist architecture of the church.

The results of the research, which aimed to analyze the acoustic properties of selected sacred buildings located in the city of Częstochowa, Poland are presented in the paper. Three architecturally unusual and completely different from each other churches were selected for the study. The churches differed in shape of their buildings, cubic volume, years of construction, interior furnishings, etc. Nine different objective parameters were used to describe the physical properties of acoustical field in the studied churches. Various factors characterizing the acoustic properties of each building were determined, such as the distribution of sound pressure level (SPL), reverberation time T30, definition D50. Next, they were thoroughly analyzed, so as to ultimately obtain distributions of individual acoustic parameters in the space of the tested building. It allowed to evaluate the quality of the received verbal or musical message depending on the place where the listener was. Further research on speech intelligibility and the musical quality of churches was performed by determining the averaged values of next four objective acoustic parameters: centre time Ts, speech clarity C50, music clarity C80, and speech transmission index (STI). A new approach to analyzing the objective physical parameters describing the sound field was presented in Sec. 4. Mean free path length and critical distance were determined for the investigated acoustic fields in each church and they were associated with a general geometric factor characterizing the complexity of the room shape. The final part of the work presents a comparative analysis of the obtained results of acoustic quality tests of the temples, and thus their usefulness in terms achieving a maximum intelligibility of speech and music. The interesting similarities were found in the spatial distribution of individual acoustic parameters characterizing the distribution of the acoustic field in temples with completely different architecture.

Church as a place of worship has a unique architectural style and is of great social importance for the Christian community. The church geometric configurations vary from classical cruciform to octagonal-shaped plan. Acoustically, some geometric shapes work much better than others while others can be downright awful. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between room characteristics and speech intelligibility in church acoustics. At the first stage of this study, a total of eight existing churches in Malaysia were identified and then grouped into three types, i.e. fan, rectangular, and cruciform. Then, a fan-shaped room model was selected to be simulated in detail for sectional studies. Nine different ceiling shapes were constructed for evaluation purposes. All the selected churches were modelled using the 3D modelling software, SketchUp and then exported into the commercial acoustic software, ODEON, for acoustical simulation. The simulated results were then compared to the parameter of speech transmission index (STI). The results indicate that there was no specific relationship of the STI with all three groups of room types. However, a direct relationship between the STI means value with its room volume as well as its distance between sound source and receiver points can be observed, whereby F3 being the highest average value of STI (0.44) whereas R2 showed the lowest average value of STI (0.30). All room models generally achieved 'fair' STI values at the front position of the altar but the STI values drop into 'poor' when the distance exceeds over than 6.5 m. In the second stage, the results obtained show a direct relationship between the STI means values with the lower ceiling height above the sound source and a shorter distance between the sound source and its surrounding walls that may provide higher speech intelligibility due to the strong early sound energy. This paper provides fundamental data on the relationships between room characteristics and speech intelligibility, which would then help with future refinements.
