Content and composition of the essential oil ofChamomilla recutita(L.) Rauschert from some European countries

Abstract: Variations in the essential oil composition of Chamomilla recutita (L.) Rauschert from different European countries were determined. A total of 39 components were identified, representing over 92% of the total oil yield. The principal biologically active compounds in chamomile oils were bisabolol oxide A (3.1-56.0%), alpha-bisabolol (0.1-44.2%), bisabolol oxide B (3.9-27.2%), cis-enyne-bicycloether (8.8-26.1%), bisabolon oxide A (0.5-24.8%), chamazulene (0.7-15.3%), spathulenol (1.7-4.8%) and (E)-beta-farnesen… Show more

“…M. recutita has been used over several generations in different ways and purposes 32 and over 120 compounds have been identified in the EO. In 13 samples from Europe, the existence of 39 compounds was reported, with the main being bisabolol oxide A 3.1 to 56.0 , α-bisabolol 0.1 to 44.2 , bisabolol oxide B 3.9-27.2 and chamazulene 0.7 to 15.3 33 . Because several varieties existing of M. recutita, the chemical characterisation of its EO may result in different profiles, including its colour, which may vary from dark blue to green shades 34 .…”

“…(−)-α-Bisabolol (Fig. 1) is a sesquiterpene alcohol isolated from chamomile flowers and is found in the essential oil (Orav et al, 2010). It has been reported to have a range of biological activities such as anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects (McKay and Blumberg, 2006), although no vascular effects have been reported to date.…”

“…The results indicate that a-bisabolol could be a novel therapeutic option for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. (1) salvia (Salvia runcinata), (2) Plinia cerrocampanensis, (3) among others. a-Bisabolol is non-toxic (LD 50 13-14 g ⁄ kg of body weight, orally, in adult mice and rats) (4)(5)(6) and is known to possess anti-inflammatory, (7,8) antibiotic, (9) gastroprotective, (10) antioxidant, (11) and antimutagenic (12) effects.…”
