Content of Methylated Inositols in Familiar Edible Plants

Abstract: Familiar plants contain large amounts of inositols; soybean, white clover, red clover, bush clover, locust tree, wisteria, and kudzu of the legume family contain pinitol (3-O-methyl-chiro-inositol) at approximately 200-600 mg/100 g fresh weight (FW). The contents of pinitol in other plants were 260 mg/100 g FW for sticky mouse-ear, 275 mg/100 g FW for chickweed, and 332 mg/100 g FW for ginkgo. chiro-Inositol of 191 and 156 mg/100 g FW was also found in dandelion and Japanese mallotus, respectively. Ononitol (4… Show more

“…Myo‐ inositol in the nonphosphorylated form, typically available in vitamin supplements, does not have this property. Although less abundant, D‐ chiro‐ inositol is also obtained from dietary sources, principally in the methylated form 3‐ O‐methyl‐D‐chiro ‐inositol (pinitol) (Negishi et al, ).…”

“…7 Different strategies including column chromatography, liquidliquid partitioning and solid phase extraction (SPE) have been used for isolation and purification of cyclitols. [8][9][10] Among the most popular methods for separation and identification of cyclitols are chromatographic techniques. The most commonly used and convenient techniques are thin layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with refractive index (RI) detector, lightscattering detector (ELSD) or with mass spectrometry (MS) detector, as well as gas chromatography (GC) combined with MS in different configurations.…”

“…paraguariensis leaf extracts showed different signal intensities (Figure ). The identification of oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, glucose, myo ‐inositol, and the purine alkaloids caffeine and theobromine was based on comparison of 2D NMR experiments recorded on these samples with published spectra data and using the method of addition by spiking the extract samples with authenticated standards (Table ). 1 H NMR spectra for all replicates of each season from mate leaf extracts can be found in the Figures S5 to S8.…”
