Content of soil organic carbon and labile fractions depend on local combinations of mineral-phase characteristics

Abstract: Abstract. Soil organic matter (SOM) is an indispensable component of terrestrial ecosystems. Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics are influenced by a number of well-known abiotic factors such as clay content, soil pH, or pedogenic oxides. These parameters interact with each other and vary in their influence on SOC depending on local conditions. To investigate the latter, the dependence of SOC accumulation on parameters and parameter combinations was statistically assessed that vary on a local scale depending on … Show more

“…We took 25 soil samples from each of these parent material strata to cover a broad range of soil texture classes, with sand and clay contents ranging from 20.1 to 89.3% and 5.7 to 34.6%, respectively, and SOC values ranging from 6.18 to 35.54 g·kg −1 . Sampled soils were free of carbonates [ 21 ]; to prevent sample (pseudo-)replication, all soils were taken from different agricultural fields.…”

“…The content of organic carbon in soils depends on several main factors like vegetation (Wei et al 2022), local climate (Mao et al 2022, mineralisation degree of organic matter (Ortner et al 2022), microbiota (Mueller et al 2015). The soil stock in the first meter of the soil profile is more organic carbon than the atmosphere and the above-ground vegetation combined (FAO 2017).…”
