Context-Dependent Personalised Feedback Prioritisation in Exploratory Learning for Mathematical Generalisation

Abstract: In this paper we address the problem of prioritising feedback on the basis of multiple heterogeneous pieces of information in exploratory learning. The problem arises when multiple types of feedback are required in order to address different types of conceptual difficulties, accommodate particular learning behaviours identified during exploration, and provide appropriate support depending on the learning mode (e.g. individual or collaborative learning) and/or the stage of the exploratory learning process. We p… Show more

“…AHP has been widely used in a variety of policy selection, decision making, adaptive learning, and recommendation systems Rokach et al, 2008;Wu, 2008). AHP has also been used for personalized learn-ing mechanism and recommendation depending on the user's learning mode, the context within a task, and the learner's characteristics (Cocea & Magoulas, 2009). Moreover, AHP has been applied in prioritizing mobile devices' notification service based on users' awareness of incoming calls and appropriation preferences (Koumoto et al, 2009).…”

“…This paper presents unpublished details of our approach for designing and evaluating the learner model focusing on: (a) a revised list of pedagogically-driven scenarios; (b) the evaluation of the modelling mechanism with domain experts; (c) outlining the role of pedagogy and system design in informing the choice and details of the modelling technique and its evaluation. The role of the learner modelling mechanism in supporting feedback prioritisation has been reported in [12], [13], [14], and a preliminary list of learning scenarios was mentioned in [15]. Issues of maintenance and enrichment of the knowledge representation in the system 1.…”

“…In previous work [11] [12], we have proposed an approach for feedback prioritisation based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process [35], a popular method in Multicriteria Decision-Making [43]. Due to the large amount of data needed from experts, the AHP approach was developed only for the most frequent combinations of criteria, where criteria refer to task difficulty, experience and arithmetic ability.…”
