The discussion of legislative initiatives, as well as the interpretation a legislative acts or amendments, is an ambiguous phenomenon within the framework of a thematic media discourse. The specified reason determines that the study of the phenomenon is a necessary and relevant thing. The analysis of a legislative hypertext involves the consideration of representative and interpretive strategies of submission of laws by media. An approach seems relevant because the media shapes the public opinion and legal culture, ensures the quality and results of the public discussion of legislative innovations. The research of socio-legal communications is based on the methodology of critical discourse analysis involving the consideration of an unobvious purpose, structure, and additional meanings of the statement. The differences between the practices of representing legal decisions and interpreting lawmaking allowed singling out key strategies for the formation of legislative discourse. The official media represent a law or legislative initiative using strategies such as discussion and popularization, propaganda of law as the basis of society, education that raises the level of legal culture of the population. Opposition media practice the interpretation of legislative activity using other strategic decisions: constructive criticism, analysis of the development and adoption process, construction of a hypothesis of application, as well as emotional (provocative) interpretation.

Summary This paper focuses on the meaning-making process as embedded in the situation in which it takes place. It puts forward the key question of what kind of knowledge is relevant to understanding. Thus, there are three central notions in the framework discussed: context, contextualization and context change. The paper is formulated against the background of a theory of metapragmatics, and it is in line with interactional sociolinguistics, as well as cultural linguistics. The results and findings will contribute to the on-going methodological discussions on contexts and contextualization and demonstrate that under certain conditions some external factors may prove to be very strong and determinant. Politically loaded perception and construction of meanings may be decisive in foregrounding some meanings. The paper will show that the dominating political viewpoint in a certain period of time and place may act as a driving force which foregrounds certain meanings and manages a certain way of understanding of texts/utterances. Contextualization can go wrong, and misplacing utterances in contexts may lead to social misunderstandings. As a conclusion, it is stressed that further investigation of context change is a valuable heuristic approach in the metapragmatic and discourse sensitive dimension in linguistic analyses. Conclusions about the samples under discussion can also motivate a deeper consideration of social effects of misunderstandings to protect us from conflicts.

A Questionnaire for the Assessment of Pragmatic Competence in Children Aged 5-8

<p>The work aims to test a new questionnaire for parents and educators to assess the pragmatic competence of children from 5 to 8 years old. Parents of 753 children and teachers of 903 children from preschool institutions took part in the testing, filling out the proposed questionnaire online. Subsequently, after the initial analysis, 674 parent questionnaires remained in the work, of which 287 questionnaires were from parents of five-year-old children (130 of them boys), 213 from parents of six-year-old children (108 boys), 131 from parents of seven-year-old children (60 boys) and 43 from parents of eight-year-old children (21 boys). And also 903 questionnaires of preschool teachers (at this stage we did not include a survey of school teachers): 487 children of 5 years old (214 boys), 409 children of 6 years old (206 boys) and 7 children of 7 years old (4 boys). Statistical analysis of the material included: 1) checking for normality of the distribution of answers; 2) analysis for consistency of the entire questionnaire, its scales and individual questions; 3) exploratory factor analysis; 4) confirmatory factor analysis; 5) identifying gender differences for each of the questions using the Mann-Whitney test. The study showed that the pragmatic competence of children includes: 1) understanding of the literal and figurative meaning of statements; 2) mastery of non-verbal means of communication; 3) communication skills: politeness, openness to communication, adequate response to the expectations of the interlocutor; 4) development of verbal creativity in various genres, including fantasy. The results of the analysis showed that girls’ pragmatic competence at the age of 5-8 years was better developed than boys, however, in general, in normatively developing children by the age of 5, the main aspects of pragmatic competence have already been developed, and in the future may deteriorate, but understanding the figurative meaning of statements continues to develop at school. This questionnaire requires some refinement and testing for test-retest and external validity.</p>
