Context in problem solving: a survey

Abstract: Abstract:Context appears in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a challenge for the coming years as shown by the various scientific events focusing on context held since 1995. However, context is already considered in other domains, such as Natural Language Processing, although through few aspects of context. We present in this paper a survey of the literature dealing directly and explicitly with context whatever the domain is. This permits us to have a clear view of the context in AI. One of the conclusions of th… Show more

“…Our proposal is based on [26], who adopted the definition of context proposed by [4] and distinguished between the concepts of contextual element and context: (i) a contextual element is any piece of data or information that allows an entity to be characterized within a domain; and (ii) context is the set of instantiated contextual elements that are needed to support a task performed by an agent (human or software). Additionally, the elements that compose context have a relevant relationship with the task that an agent is performing.…”

“…YAWL is a widely used PAIS on Academia and is implemented in a service-oriented way that already offer interfaces for developers to implement external services that communicate with the YAWL workflow engine. YAWL 3 is a PAIS that supports the workflow language also named YAWL (Yet Another Workflow Language) based on workflow patterns 4 . It supports dynamic process adaptation through the so-called worklets.…”

“…At the end of that decade, the CONTEXT conference was started to gather researchers from diverse fields with the common binding interest in understating, modelling and exploiting CI. The reader is referred to Brézillon's survey [6] for an account of early works in many diverse fields and to [7] for a dedicated survey on works in AI.…”

“…Until recently, a trend was mobilizing computers for the organization of our collections, considered like a group of objects waiting to be organized in ad hoc classes that must be created simultaneously ( [4], [9], [10]). …”
