Many scenarios of beyond 3G mobile communications describe the integration of various access technologies into one system. Being always best connected under certain optimization criteria will be a crucial point for network operators and mobile users and requires network changes of mobile devices at runtime, the so-called vertical handovers. For those, bandwidth fluctuations up to the order of one or two magnitudes, e. g., when changing from an IEEE 802.11 to a GPRS System, have to be expected and applications have to cope with them in an user friendly way. Multi-modality and flexible data representations exploiting weights and semantic of transmitted data as means for making applications resource adaptive are currently under investigation. On top of that, device and system-wide adaptation control instances are needed to solve cross-layer and inter-application issues. This requires a rethinking of the classical communication paradigm of OSI-like protocol layering. With this article, an overview on adaptation in communications is presented and an experimental framework providing system support for application adaptation and adaptation control is introduced as part of that discussion.

Abstract. Services in pervasive computing systems must evolve so that they become minimally intrusive and exhibit inherent proactiveness and dynamic adaptability to the current conditions, user preferences and environment. Context awareness has the potential to greatly reduce the human attention and interaction bottlenecks, to give the user the impression that services fade into the background, and to support intelligent personalization and adaptability features. To establish this functionality, an infrastructure is required to collect, manage, maintain, synchronize, infer and disseminate context information towards applications and users. This paper presents a context model and ambient context management system that have been integrated into a pervasive service platform. This research is being carried out in the DAIDALOS IST Integrated Project for pervasive environments. The final goal is to integrate the platform developed with a heterogeneous all-IP network, in order to provide intelligent pervasive services to mobile and non-mobile users based on a robust context-aware environment.

Seamless interoperability between two dissimilar networks require handoff from one network to the other. Such handoffs are known as vertical handoffs. Vertical handoff introduces a shift in the approach to handoffs. It deals with handoffs between dissimilar networks, such as from an access point to a base station or vice versa. A horizontal handoff, on the other hand, involves the scenario wherein the handoff is within the same network such as handoffs between cells. Most of the existing research proposes to implement vertical handoff on an overlay network, wherein a user moves from one geographic location to another, such as moving from a WLAN coverage area to a cellular coverage area, or vice versa. This research discusses the need to trigger a vertical handoff based on changes in the mobile environment independent of geographic changes of a user. We develop a novel framework that executes vertical handoff based on a multilayer approach coupled together with adjunct information such as pricing and user preference. This framework allows changes in applications, variations in network conditions and user preferences to trigger vertical handoffs. We conclude by providing a general evaluation of the framework.
