Context Matters: Home‐level But Not Individual‐Level Recovery Social Capital Predicts Residents’ Relapse

Abstract: Highlights• House level factors predicted relapse. Individual level factors did not predict relapse.• Residents status in recovery homes is based upon the total recovery capital available in homes.• Recovery is strongly influenced by others with whom the recovering person has regular social contact.• Individual's probability of relapse was primarily related to the "recoveries" of home peers.• Recovery capital available in homes highlights the importance of the social environment for recovery.

“…Strong associations have been found between ongoing contact with substance users and continued substance use (147). Contrarily, stronger identification with non-using groups, social networks including more people in recovery and fewer people in active use have been associated with improved treatment and recovery outcomes in emerging adulthood (133,(148)(149)(150)(151). This study suggests the need to ascertain the exact nature of social networks and the social contexts within which they are developed (152).…”

“…21 In the last two decades, there have been some studies dealing with the importance of self-efficacy, internal strengths and their contexts as a belief and their relation to forms of recovery from drugs and alcohol or relapse. 22 Annual statistics of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in 2017, it was estimated that the number of users of illicit drugs in the United States is about 7 million.
