Contextual factors and prejudice at the beginning of the migrant influx: The Moroccan case in Seville, Spain

Abstract: Studies addressing contextual factors associated with anti‐immigrant prejudice have focused on out‐group size and rapid demographic changes in receiving locations. However, the territorial concentration and distribution of ethnic minorities at a local and intraurban level has received little attention. We analyse the relationship between emerging territorial concentration points—alongside other contextual variables—by Moroccans and receiving society's growing prejudice towards them in a city experiencing the s… Show more

“…The P and R indices, by estimating the possibility of sharing common spaces, can therefore play a fundamental role in helping us to understand the spatial dimension of interethnic relations, as different theoretical approaches have shown (e.g. Allport, 1954;Blalock, 1967;Iglesias-Pascual et al, 2019).…”

“…Assuming that segregation reflects social inequalities (Yao et al, 2019), the notions of segregation and integration largely depend on the particular social group under investigation (Krysan et al, 2017). A refined analysis of social changes in specific economic contexts will contribute towards delineating the relationship between ethnic segregation and the design of inclusive policies (Allen et al, 2004;Hochstenbach & Musterd, 2018;Iglesias-Pascual et al, 2019;Johnston et al, 2014). In this regard, expanding immigration flows and rising economic inequalities have produced a generalized increase in social segregation in European cities (Lymperopoulou & Finney, 2017;Monkkonen et al, 2018;Tammaru et al, 2016Tammaru et al, , 2017.…”

“…To analyze the unequal distribution of the Chinese population and therefore its different degree of concentration in the city we used the location quotient (LQ; Iglesias-Pascual 2017; Wright, Ellis, and Parks 2005). The LQ allows us to compare the percentage of foreign-born individuals of nationality X relative to the population T of a particular section i with the percentage that shares the same nationality across the city as a whole (Brown and Chung 2006):Measuring the presence of ethnic minorities according to the territorial concentration allows us to examine its relationship with the emergence of attitudes of rejection toward immigrants by the host society, an aspect that can determine the perception of well-being among the immigrant population (Iglesias-Pascual, Paloma, and García-Ramírez 2019). Taking into account these levels of concentration, as well as other studies (Liu 2009), LQ values ≥2 were considered a high concentration (absolute concentration).…”

“…To understand the relationship between the distribution of the immigrant population and their perceptions about living in the host society, recent studies (Iglesias-Pascual, Paloma, and García-Ramírez 2019) have moved away from traditional models of interpreting segregation, in favor of analyzing their intraurban distribution and degree of residential concentration in a city center or surrounding neighborhoods.…”
