Contextual Location in the Home Using Bluetooth Beacons

Abstract: Location sensing is a key enabling technology for Ubicomp to support contextual interaction. However, the laboratories where calibrated testing of location technologies is done are very different to the domestic situations where 'context' is a problematic social construct. This study reports measurements of Bluetooth beacons, informed by laboratory studies, but done in diverse domestic settings. The design of these surveys has been motivated by the natural environment implied in the Bluetooth beacon standards … Show more

“…The development of a BLE-based indoor localization make use of the RSSI reported by the mobile devices—then, followed by one of two main approaches: Triangulation [ 13 ] and fingerprinting [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Lately, other approaches, such as context [ 17 ] and crowdsensing [ 18 ], are also being actively explored. Despite the efforts being carried out by the research community, the robust development of wireless indoor localization mechanism remains a major challenge.…”

“…Although the former mentioned INS solutions can improve the tracking distance at some extend, these solutions have not been tested and verified in long-term localization experiment, especially in high motion state. Except for INS-based localization system, radio frequency-based localization systems have been exploited sufficiently in recent decades, such as ZigBee [12], [13] WIFI [14], [15] Ultra-Wideband (UWB) [16], [17] Bluetooth [18], [19] and so on. These radio frequency-based localization system mainly adopt Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) or ranging information to estimation target position [20].…”
