Contingency Filtering Techniques for Preventive Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow

Abstract: Abstract-This paper focuses on contingency filtering to accelerate the iterative solution of preventive security-constrained optimal power flow (PSCOPF) problems. To this end, we propose two novel filtering techniques relying on the comparison at an intermediate PSCOPF solution of post-contingency constraint violations among postulated contingencies. We assess these techniques by comparing them with severity index-based filtering schemes, on a 60-and a 118-bus system. Our results show that the proposed conting… Show more

“…Any efficient contingency filtering technique can be used to this purpose. In this work, unless otherwise specified, we use the non-dominated contingency (NDC) approach motivated by the good results obtained with it in the context of PSCOPF [18]. Additional filtering results will also be provided by means of the classical severityindex based contingency ranking technique [1], [3].…”

“…The basic idea is that only a few contingencies are binding and require preventive and/or corrective re-dispatch; post-fault constraints related to non-binding contingencies are redundant and can be ignored (e.g. [25], [26]). However, all existing methods consider operation problems in isolation, not dealing with investment decisions that impose a more limiting coupling structure.…”

“…Viewed in this light, it can be parented to the significant body of work related to contingency filtering and contingency screening in power systems (see, e.g., [15], [16], [17]). Most of the approaches for contingency filtering however rely on deterministic algorithms while the one proposed in this paper is a stochastic one.…”
