“…For example, patients contract with their therapist each week to do certain activities, such as attending a medical appointment or 12‐step meetings or completing a job application. If these activities are completed and verified via receipts or other documentation, patients can earn vouchers or prizes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 . For example, Iguchi et al 5 found that reinforcing activities that are incompatible with drug use, such as those described above, resulted in greater abstinence than reinforcing abstinence directly in a sample of methadone‐maintained patients.…”

“…Such procedures are hypothesized to improve overall functioning, thereby possibly extending beneficial effects even after reinforcement for negative samples is discontinued. 28 Contingency management interventions are usually considered an add-on to other forms of therapy, and growing evidence suggests that they may augment outcomes when combined with other effective therapies, including pharmacotherapies. In a study of desipramine hydrochloride paired with CM, for example, Kosten et al 29 found that the number of drug-free samples increased more rapidly in the desipramine and CM group than in those treated with either desipramine or CM alone.…”

“…Thus, it may be that the success of BA in the treatment of substance abusers with depression is due to the alleviatory effects of BA on anhedonic symptoms, which are relatively common among substance/alcohol abusers, particularly cocaine users. Although not a study of BA per se, Lewis and Petry (2005) used CM to increase activity levels among 159 cocaine-dependent adults. They found that participants who engaged in family activities remained in treatment longer, were abstinent for more weeks, and reported greater reduction in family conflict compared to participants who did not engage in family activities.…”
