Contingent Labor

Abstract

The contingent workforce provides both challenges and opportunities for communication in organizations. This entry provides societal background to this growing subset of workers, gives definitions for contingent labor arrangements, and discusses the communication issues and relevant research findings these arrangements pose to worker satisfaction, workplace harassment and mistreatment, employee identification, control, and the communication experiences of contingent workers. Future directions for research are then proposed.
