Continuous lipase esterification using process intensification technologies

Abstract: BACKGROUND Nowadays, developing continuous enzymatic processes, especially when a two‐phase medium is required, remains a great challenge. So, there is a need to provide a technical solution for generating highly controlled interfacial area in a small volume. In this study, four types of reactors conventionally used for chemical process intensification and marketed by Corning, Chart Industries, NiTech Solutions and AM Technology, were tested for continuous lipase‐catalysed esterification in two‐phase medium. R… Show more

“…Also, conversion was reported to decrease when mobile phase flow rate is increased because of the decrease of the residence time [2,4]. In our previous works [7] upon so-called "dynamic mixing intensified reactors" (Corning reactor, Chart reactor…) opposite results were observed. Detailed description of dynamic mixing reactors can be found in [7].…”

“…Organocatalysts, organometallic complexes, metal nanoparticles, or enzymes have already been implemented using strategies based either on packed‐beds, monoliths or wall‐coating, but a lot of work remains in order to increase the lifespan of the supported catalysts and to combine different micro‐reactors together. Some examples also involve soluble forms of catalysts …”

“…Some of the results arising from the benchmark studies performed in our lab are detailed in Despènes et al, 2012;Elgue et al, 2014;Raimondi et al, 2014). Temperatures (utility and process) and conversion profiles.…”

“…In order to emphasize a result of such a methodology, a benchmark study has been performed at the MEPI in Toulouse based on an esterification enzymic reaction (Elgue et al, 2014). The lipase-catalysed esterification of oleic acid with ethanol has been studied in various equipments (from lab Eppendorf to continuous reactors at pilot scale) leading to the same conclusions: this esterification is limited by liquid-liquid mass transfer.…”
