Continuous Mesoporous Silica Films with Highly Ordered Large Pore Structures

Abstract: The formation of continuous mesoporous silica films with large periodic cage and pore structures is reported here. The authors use low‐cost commercially available triblock copolymers and poly(ethylene oxide) non‐ionic surfactants as the structure‐directing agents in conjunction with dip‐coat processing. In the Figure a transmission electron microscope image of a calcined hexagonal mesoporous silica film is shown.

“…
Self-ordered hexagonal and cubic mesoporous silicate [1,2] films [3] have successfully been used in the fabrication of NO gas sensors, based on the surface photovoltage (SPV) system, with a structure of metal/SiO 2 (meso)/n-Si. [4] These sensors exhibited significant sensing properties that were dependent on the self-ordered structure of the mesoporous film.

The synthesis of highly ordered mesostructured materials has led to a variety of two-and three-dimensional (2D/3D) periodic uniform pores in the nanosize region.

“…In fact, developing high performance insulators based on BMI resin has been one of the hottest topics in recent years. Some kinds of inorganic fillers have been used to prepare BMI resin matrix composites [6][7][8][9], of them mesoporous silica has attracted considerable interests owing to its highly ordered and uniform mesoporosity [10] as well as extremely low dielectric constant (1.4-2.1) [11][12][13][14]. However, present mesoporous silica mainly consists of Si-O-Si like zeolite, showing brittleness and poor interaction with organic polymers, and thus can not significantly improve the integrated performance of original polymers.…”

“…[1] The process of charge injection is of fundamental importance, as it can control the electrical characteristics and/or the efficiency of the device. [2] A great deal of contemporary research addresses various aspects of metal/ organic interfaces, such as morphology, [3,4] energetics, [5±11] and charge transport. [12±15] Modification of interfaces has also received considerable attention; especially on the cathode side of the device where the need to replace low work function metals, such as Ca, with more stable ones, such as Al, is pressing.…”

“…[16±19] On the anode-side of the device, indium tin oxide (ITO) seems to be the electrode of choice. Although it comes with its own set of problems, such as a large variation in properties depending on preparation, [20,21] release of indium and oxygen into the organic layer, [22] and poor compatibility with some organic materials, [4] it offers a combination of transparency and conductivity that is hard to replace. Modification of ITO…”
