Continuous Monitoring of the Flooding Dynamics in the Albufera Wetland (Spain) by Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 Datasets

Abstract: Satellite data are very useful for the continuous monitoring of ever-changing environments, such as wetlands. In this study, we investigated the use of multispectral imagery to monitor the winter evolution of land cover in the Albufera wetland (Spain), using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 datasets. With multispectral data, the frequency of observation is limited by the possible presence of clouds. To overcome this problem, the data acquired by the two missions, Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2, were jointly used, thus rough… Show more

“…Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Building Index (NDBI), etc. are all manifestations of the interaction between bands in a ratio [32]. Among them, NDVI is expressed as (NIR − R)/(NIR + R), which is related to the reflection value of the NIR band and the R band.…”

“…The algorithm adjusted from the extracted pixel values of the NDWI index successfully estimated the volume of water in the rice fields for each generated scene. The results have been compared with the winter flood duration maps of this wetland obtained by Cavallo et al [60]. They combined three multispectral indices (NDWI, MNDWI and NDVI) and developed an automatic classification method of four land cover classes.…”

“…Although the volume of water in the rice fields was not analysed in detail, their results are consistent with our observations regarding the extension and duration of submerged zones in different wetland areas. In particular, the areas delineated as Tancats, closer to the Albufera Lake, showed the maximum duration of inundation and were classified as Open Water (W) for an average of 60-80 days [60]. The indices mentioned above have been used to assess long-term land cover variations in other wetlands regions with satisfactory results.…”

“…Based on the spectral information and morphological and other features in the images, we used the normalized difference water index (NDWI), the modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI), the maximum likelihood method and random forest to extract the edge information of the Yellow River water bodies. MNDWI and NDWI are ratio indexes that rely on the characteristics of river water in multispectral bands (such as the highest and lowest reflectance bands); the differences among land cover types are emphasised by the ratio, with the brightness of water bodies enhanced to their maximum value, while background features are suppressed in processed images [67,68]. The maximum likelihood method is important in supervised classification.…”
