Continuous noninvasive hemoglobin monitoring

Abstract: NIHb measurements may currently be considered to be a supplemental tool for monitoring trends in Hb concentration, but are not currently developed enough to replace an invasive approach. Moreover, further studies are still required before implementing NIHb in the clinical decision-making process. Specifically, no studies have demonstrated that this technology improves clinical outcomes or patient safety.

“…In previous studies [ 1 , 2 , 10 , 11 ], the range of correlation coefficient between SpHb and Lab-Hb was reported from 0.47 to 0.72. It was assumed that the correlation coefficient would be approximately 0.7 in our study.…”

“…For continuous through-the-skin optical noninvasive Hb monitoring (NIHb or SpHb), portable bedside equipment (e.g. within operating rooms or intensive care units) also is already on the market, but accuracy presently still needs improvement [44,45]. The optical measurement principle is strongly related to pulse oximetry, and it is likely that over the coming years throughthe-skin Hb-measurement accuracy can be further improved and miniaturized to pocket size (for periodic Hb-check).…”
