Continuous phase stabilization and active interferometer control using two modes

Abstract: We present a computer-based active interferometer stabilization method that can be set to an arbitrary phase difference and does not rely on modulation of the interfering beams. The scheme utilizes two orthogonal modes propagating through the interferometer with a constant phase difference between them to extract a common relative phase and generate a linear feedback signal. Switching times of 50 ms over a range of 0-6 radians at 632.8 nm are experimentally demonstrated. The relative interferometer phase can b… Show more

“…However, for applications requiring delay scans, it is of prime importance to be able to continuously lock the pump-probe phase at arbitrary set-points, with a uniform stability. A solution consists in using two signals modulated with the delay, but not in phase with one another [22][23][24]. Calling φ (t) the phase difference between the pump and the probe beams, that we want to measure and stabilize, such signals write…”

“…It is important to note that the phase variation generated by nanometric surface displacements is usually much smaller than the phase variation caused by vibrations. Some of this undesirable noise can be minimized by introducing an active phase feedback circuit in the reference beam which stabilizes the interferometer with, for example, a mechanical positioner such as a PZT, acoustooptic or electro-optic modulation [10,[15][16][17]. A much more simple approach consists of using the vibrations present in the system as a source of random phase shifts.…”
