Continuous Recording of Uteroplacental Blood Volume in the Human

Abstract: A method for the continuous recording of uteroplacental blood volume has been described. A radioactive isotope (γ emitter) which is retained in the blood stream is injected into a cubital vein and the organ is surveyed externally using a γ detector. The activity measured is directly proportional to the blood volume surveyed by the detector. The method is satisfactory for organs with a large blood volume compared to that of the tissues intervening between organ and detector. Therefore uteroplacental blood volum… Show more

“…The reasons for these discrepancies, apart from discernible uterine contractions, could not be determined. The placenta continuously undergoes blood volume and flow changes similar to the hemometakinesia or 'borrowing-lending' phenomenon described by De Bakey et al [3], as could be demonstrated by a new technic for measur ing the hemodynamics of the placenta [11]. Thus, the observed variations in clearance half-time can be explained and the value of single-measure ments for the placenta are of limited value.…”

“…Intravasal hypovolemia, a decreased cardiac output and diminished uteroplacental flow (BLEKTA et al 1970, FRIEDBERG et d. 1967, SMITH 1970, ASSALI 1954, BERGER et al 1963, LIPPERT et al 1973) are some of the cardiovascular alterations in toxemia in spite of the clinical signs of edema and overhydration.…”
