Continuous synthesis of organomagnesium compounds

Abstract: Continuous synthesis of organomagnesium compounds by the reaction of magnesium with haloalkanes RX (R = Et, n-Bu, n-Oct, c-Hex, Ph; X = Cl, Br) in a stirred column-type apparatus was studied. The effects of the solvent, solvating solvent to RX molar ratio, and temperature in the reaction zone on the RX conversion and yield of organomagnesium compounds was examined.

“…In 2012, a continuous preparation of Grignard reagents was performed using a heated column with a multi-bladed stirrer filled with granulated magnesium ( Scheme 100 ) [ 377 ]. The halide was fed from the bottom as a mixture in ether (diethyl ether or THF) and toluene.…”

“…Other processes are based on the use of thermostated columns containing some rotating blades where granulated magnesium (diam. 1–3 mm) was inserted from the top and the halide pumped from the bottom . The final Grignard reagent was collected from the top in a collecting vessel.…”

“…Few examples describe the production of organomagnesium species under flow conditions [36][37][38][39], and only three use a practical system with a broad range of substrates [40][41][42]. The Alcázar group reported the generation and subsequent use of Grignard reagents [40].…”
