Contrast Agent Incorporation into Silicone Enables Real‐Time Flow‐Structure Analysis of Mammalian Vein‐Inspired Soft Pumps

Abstract: The construction of machines consisting essentially of soft parts is a nascent and multidisciplinary research field between material science, machine engineering, and robotics. Soft silicones represent a promising class of materials for the creation of a vast multitude of biologically inspired entities. In the present work, a new type of mammalian vein‐inspired soft silicone pump is introduced and characterized, which is fabricated by virtual lost‐wax casting of 3D‐printed injection molds. These pumps can be a… Show more

“…The only currently existing soft robot where this is the case is Octobot [36], where the pressure is generated using the catalyzed chemical decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. However, the development of soft pumps for the application in soft robotics, especially based on the internal combustion of hydrocarbons, is currently underway [49][50][51][52]. Additionally, the realization of the chemical reaction between citric acid and sodium bicarbonate in a soft manner seems possible.…”

“…3D printing is now emerging as both a method for producing robots, machines, and sensors indirectly using fugitive molds; or directly, using Digital Mask Project Stereolithography (DMP‐SL), a commercial “polyjet” polymer deposition process to directly form complex 3D pneumatic actuators and robots containing functionally graded materials, and via Direct Ink Writing (DIW) (Figure a–c). In an example by Wehner et al (2016), the energy source for driving actuation is directly embedded within the robot itself .…”

“…Therefore, the performance of fluid actuators is also dependent on the preparation and structure of high-performance soft materials. Inspired by the penis as a variable-volume hydrostatic skeleton [142] , Loepfe et al created a new type of mammalian vein-inspired soft silicone pump [143] . Soft silicone is a key factor that determines the performance of a pump.…”
