Contrast-bolus MR angiography of the transplanted kidney with a low-field (0.5-T) scanner: diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of images and reconstructions in the evaluation of vascular complications

Abstract: Contrast-enhanced MRA, even with a low-field (0.5-T) unit, is a feasible, sensitive and accurate technique for the study of the renal arteries of the transplanted kidney.

“…It was often assumed that more advanced imaging techniques are difficult to use, especially at static field strengths below 0.5 T. In addition to noncontrast MRA, such as the time-of-flight MRA, contrast-enhanced MRA using a Gd contrast agent can be imaged on low-field MR scanners. 69 , 70 Rinck and Muller 47 reported that the contrast effect of contrast agents in low-field MRI systems is lower than that in high-field MRI systems, which seems to be a disadvantage. However, one of the most important imaging parameters for contrast-enhanced MRA is sufficiently short TE.…”

“…Compared to DSA, NCE-MRA displays a sensitivity up to 100%, a specificity ranging from 85.7 to 90% and an accuracy of 91-96.6% [104,105,111,112]. Studies using CE-MRA report a comparable sensitivity and specificity [113][114][115][116][117]. It is difficult to distinguish between the results of the CE and NCE-MRA studies, due to the low number of inclusions and technical improvement of MRA techniques over the years.…”
