Contrast-Enhanced Imaging Features and Clinicopathological Investigation of Steatohepatitic Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract: Steatohepatitic hepatocellular carcinoma (SH-HCC) is a distinctive histologic variant of HCC for the presence of steatohepatitis. This study intended to evaluate the contrast-enhanced imaging features and clinicopathological characteristics of 26 SH-HCCs in comparison with 26 age-and-sex-matched non-SH-HCCs. The frequency of obesity (34.6%, p = 0.048) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (23.1%, p = 0.042) were significantly higher in SH-HCC patients. As seen via B-mode ultrasound (BMUS), SH-HCCs were predominantly hy… Show more

“…This comprehensive approach allows radiologists to assess the tumor’s haemodynamic behavior, leading to improved accuracy in HCC diagnosis and prognosis. [ 30 ] The LI-RADS is an established and standardized system designed to interpret and report imaging findings for individuals at risk of early recurrence assessment. [ 31 , 32 ] In our study, a significant finding was that LI-RADS scores obtained from CEUS independently predicted early tumor recurrence in patients with HCC following hepatectomy.…”

“…Additionally, our study finds that the fat fraction of the tumor does not significantly differ between patients with fatty liver and non-fatty liver, despite a previous study indicating a higher median fat fraction in HCCs with liver steatosis ( 3 ). It’s worth noting that steatotic and steatohepatitic HCCs, which often exhibit diffuse fat in the mass ( 24 ), are closely associated with underlying fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome ( 25 ). Most of the patients with fatty liver or without fatty liver in this study were accompanied by chronic HBV or HCV infection.…”
