Contrast-enhanced ultrasound findings in soft-tissue lesions: preliminary results

Abstract: CEUS with analysis of contrast-enhancement kinetics is a relatively low-cost, minimally invasive imaging technique, which appears to be a potentially effective first-level method for identifying suspicious soft-tissue masses.

“…The necrotic central portion of the tumor showed no enhancement. Our quantitative analysis results were similar to the findings of Stramare et al, 14 in that the viable peripheral soft tissue sarcomas showed early enhancement and a rapid time to peak. The patient had a limb‐sparing complete resection of the tumor and remained without disease after almost 2 years of follow‐up.…”

“…Stramare et al 14 evaluated 14 soft tissue lesions by contrast‐enhanced sonography, including 7 malignant (1 metastasis, 5 soft tissue sarcomas, and 1 lymphoma) and 7 benign (3 schwannomas, 1 angioleiomyoma, and 3 lipomas) tumors. They concluded that in malignant lesions, enhancement began earlier, and the time to peak was reached earlier, than in benign lesions.…”

“…2). Although potentially a very useful imaging tool [15], CEUS is still not widely used in clinical practice, and few reports have discussed its use in the evaluation of STT. The purposes of this pilot prospective longitudinal study were: evaluating the correlation between the results of histological examinations obtained by the simple unenhanced ultrasonography guidance and those obtained by CEUS guidance; comparing these results with the reference sample given from histopathological examination of the resected surgical mass.…”
