Contrast‐Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) in the Evaluation of Hemoperitoneum in Patients With Cirrhosis

Abstract: Hemoperitoneum in cirrhosis is a life-threatening condition that requires emergent evaluation. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) permits multiple dynamic characterizations of abdominal structures through all vascular phases, and contrast extravasation or the presence of microbubbles in the ascites could be a sensitive tool. We reviewed 13 patients with cirrhosis that underwent CEUS due to high suspicion for intra-abdominal bleeding. In 10 cases, CEUS demonstrated extravasation of contrast, including 2 instan… Show more

“…Ultrasonography is a versatile modality that offers irreplaceable advantages such as rapid availability in an emergency setting and easy application to patients who are bedridden, critically ill, or difficult to transport to the radiology department for a CT scan [ 3 , 18 , 19 ]. Moreover, CEUS has advantages in terms of safety issues.…”

“…However, US has shown some limitations in patients with small-sized tumors [ 50 , 51 ]. CEUS is another useful test since it has an elevated resolution and shows in real time hemorrhage from spontaneous or non-spontaneous rupture [ 52 ]. It usually displays HCC as contrast-enhancing lesions with quick, subsequent washout [ 53 ].…”
