Contrast‐Induced encephalopathy following diagnostic coronary angiography

Abstract: Contrast‐induced encephalopathy (CIE) is a rare, reversible complication of coronary angiography that can mimic acute strokes. This case illustrates the diagnostic challenges for a patient presenting with confusion following coronary angiography and raises awareness for CIE as diagnosis of exclusion.

“…However, four of them were excluded because it was defined as allergic reactions, vasospasm, and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, and complete data were not available in the other six papers. “…This situation, mainly reported after neurovascular interventions, has also been rarely seen in patients who underwent coronary angiography and may result in encephalopathy. 1 Encephalopathy can also be seen as posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), usually accompanied by rapidly progressive acute onset mental status changes, visual disturbances, paresis, and widespread seizures, often having a transient clinic and regressing within days. Cranial imaging in this syndrome is usually characterized by predominantly subcortical, parieto-occipital reversible vasogenic brain edema.…”
