“…The effect of photo-oxidation on the adsorption behavior of MNPs is studied using batch adsorption experiments by determining adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms. The Langmuir and Freundlich models are the most commonly used models to describe adsorption of contaminants on pristine and aged MNPs, indicating mono- or multilayer adsorption processes on heterogeneous surfaces. ,, The influence of photo-oxidation on the adsorption behavior of contaminants on MNPs mainly depends on three mechanisms (Figure ): (1) the increase in surface roughness and SSA of aged MNPs could provide more adsorption sites for contaminants, , (2) decreased hydrophobicity and increased O-containing functional groups can change adsorption affinity of contaminants to MNPs mediated by hydrophobic or hydrophilic interaction, , and (3) increased electronegativity of aged MNPs could influence the electrostatic interaction between MNPs and charged OPs and HMs. , …”

“…Currently, several reviews have summarized the weathering processes of MPs and corresponding effects on the environmental behavior of MPs, mainly considering the different weathering processes and mechanisms, and the effect of weathering on the properties, adsorption, and toxicity of MPs. , However, few of them have thoroughly considered the physical, chemical, and biological effects of photo-oxidation of MNPs in the environment. In the last two years, an increasing number of studies have focused on understanding the process of photo-oxidation and its impact on different types of MNPs, as well as the effect of environmental constituents on this process. ,,, Furthermore, research on the influence of photo-oxidation of MNPs on the adsorption and photochemical transformation of other pollutants has gained more attention. The biological effect of photo-oxidized MNPs on organism activity, especially microbial community composition and function has also become a subject of interest among scholars. ,, More importantly, the photo-oxidation process and the physical, chemical, and biological behavior of MNPs are mutually associated and inseparable. Thus, it is necessary to give a critical review of recent research on the physical, chemical, and biological effects of photoaged MNPs in aquatic and terrestrial environments.…”

“…Jiang et al found that the aging mode would significantly affect the surface structure, hydrophobicity, surface charge, and concentration of oxygencontaining functional groups of MPs, resulting in differences in the adsorption characteristics of SAs on MPs. 9 However, the aging behavior of MPs is inevitable in the natural environment. It has been reported that MPs were found widely distributed in major freshwater systems and even were detected in the drinking water all over the world.…”

“…In addition, sulfonamides (SAs) are a class of highly toxic antibiotics that are widely used to induce antibiotic resistance genes. Jiang et al found that the aging mode would significantly affect the surface structure, hydrophobicity, surface charge, and concentration of oxygen-containing functional groups of MPs, resulting in differences in the adsorption characteristics of SAs on MPs . However, the aging behavior of MPs is inevitable in the natural environment.…”

“…They can be aggregated with food into body and cause adverse effects. 6,7 As one of the major inorganic pollutants, arsenic is bioaccumulative and difficult to biodegrade, which has shown a high affinity with MPs. 8,9 Moreover, arsenic is correlated with diverse health issues including neural, physiological, reproductive, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, and skin-associated disorders.…”
