Contrasting reproductive strategies of two Hawaiian Montipora corals

Abstract: Sessile invertebrates often engage in synchronized spawning events to increase likelihood of fertilization. Although coral reefs are well studied, the reproductive behavior of most species and the relative influence of various environmental cues that drive reproduction are not well understood. We conducted a comparative examination of the reproduction of the well-studied Hawaiian coral Montipora capitata and the relatively unknown reproduction of its congener, Montipora flabellata. Both are simultaneous hermap… Show more

“…Genera karang yang mendominasi perairan dangkal maupun dalam di seluruh stasiun pengambilan sampel pada dua peringkat teratas adalah Porites dan Montipora. Porites dan Montipora termasuk dalam jenis genera karang keras yang paling mendominasi di seluruh dunia (Henley et al 2022). Dominasi Porites dan Montipora dapat disebabkan oleh keunggulan reproduksi brooding mereka (Alam et al 2022).…”

“…Specifically, certain species, when exposed to warming waters and the stress of subsequent bleaching, demonstrate a long-term loss of sperm motility, reduction of egg size, and abnormal larval development 12 or loss of reproduction the following years 15 . It is hypothesized that this multi-year impact may be due to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) damage incurred by reproductive stem cells during bleaching, when the coral loses the UVR protection produced by its symbionts 16 . Therefore, an approach that can circumvent these climate change-related reproduction issues is needed, enabling cryopreservation of the entire coral organism without waiting for increasingly uncertain yearly reproductive events.…”
