“…Similar fish monitoring programmes were initiated in the Tsitsikamma National Park in 1990 (Brouwer 2002;Cowley et al 2002;Brouwer et al 2003;Attwood and Cowley 2005;Kerwath et al 2007a;Watt-Pringle 2009), in the St Lucia Marine Reserve in 2001 (Mann 2012) and Goukamma MPA in 2001(Kerwath 2005Kerwath et al 2007aKerwath et al , 2008. More recently, fish tagging programmes affiliated to the ORICFTP have commenced in the Pondoland Marine Protected Area in 2006 (Maggs 2011;Maggs et al 2013b), in the Ngqura Harbour in 2007 ( ML Dicken, KZN Sharks Board, pers. comm.…”

“…The polymorphism model refers to there being a combination of resident individuals and nomadic individuals within a population, while the tourist model refers to temporary residence of individuals, with periodic nomadic behaviour. It has been questioned whether these patterns are representative of fish movement or an artefact of the tagging strategy (Attwood and Bennett 1994;Maggs 2011). Most studies provided discussion on the distribution of recapture effort, which could potentially mask movement patterns.…”

“…Fully protected no-take MPAs displace fishing effort from an area, thereby providing resident marine species with a refuge from fishing (Sobel and Dahlgren 2004). In South Africa, as in many other parts of the world, overexploited fish species have often been found to be more abundant and of a larger mean size in areas where they are protected from fishing (Buxton and Smale 1989;Attwood 1991, 1993;Buxton 1993;Garratt 1993;Cowley et al 2002;Halpern and Warner 2002;Götz et al 2009;Maggs et al 2013a). Population recovery within the boundaries of a no-take protected area can provide insurance against management failure in fished areas (Bohnsack 1990(Bohnsack , 1996 and, from a fisheries perspective, can lead to replenishment of nearby fished areas through density-dependent spillover of post-settlement fishes and seeding of eggs and larvae (Bohnsack 1996;Russ 2002;Sale et al 2005;Harrison et al 2012).…”
