Contribution of Leisure Context, Motivation and Experience to the Frequency of Participation in Structured Leisure Activities among Adolescents

Abstract: Leisure time is considered an important context for adolescent development. The purpose of this article is to investigate what contributes to the frequency of adolescents’ participation in structured leisure activities (SLA). Participants were aged 14–21 years (M = 18.87, SD = 1.23) and 44.8% of participants were female. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. Results indicate that boys and adolescents who perceive the context of participation in SLA as safe, are externally or intrinsically motivated,… Show more

“…This division would suggest that enjoyment and obligation are mutually exclusive. However, as some SDT scholars have pointed out, while intrinsic motivation is seen as a "hallmark" of positive motivation in leisure activities, it is reasonable to expect a combination of different types of motivation at once (Belo sevic & Feric, 2022;Caldwell et al, 2010). This is particularly true for adolescents' OLTA, which typically present the participants with rules and regulations, and often also a specific program of activities, which also suggests that some forms of extrinsic motivation are at play in such settings.…”

“…All stakeholders whose interventions are primarily aimed at empowering adolescents should carefully consider how they can use the context of school, family, community, and leisure to promote positive values and behaviors and help adolescents use their time wisely so that it can contribute positively to their development. This means that it is not enough to just provide leisure activities in a particular context, but that it is important to provide adolescents with quality and meaningful leisure time in order to positively influence their development 25,26 and prevent the occurrence of risky behaviors and problems, including sexual risk behaviors.…”

“…24 Although participation in SLA can lead to positive developmental outcomes, it is important to think much more broadly and beyond the domain of the activities themselves, especially because knowledge about the effectiveness of interventions in the area of leisure is still very limited. 25,26 The aim of the study was to gain insight into the prevalence of sexual risk behaviors and to determine whether socio-demographic characteristics and school-related behaviors contribute to sexual risk behaviors among adolescents, independent of participation in SLA. The study results presented can serve as a basis for planning evidence-based interventions to promote positive development or prevention of risky behaviors among adolescents.…”

“…Over the past few decades, leisure and leisure activities have been investigated in many contexts, at different levels and across the breadth of the issue, from the exploration of work-leisure relationship [20][21][22], the leisure functions [23] and context [24], to the impact of information technology and the information society on leisure [25] or the emergence of networked communities [26][27][28]. The influences and impacts of the globalization of leisure, also referred to as the McDonaldization of Society [29] or the somewhat different globalization trend of neat capitalism [30], have also come into the field of view of theorists.…”
