Contribution of weight status to asthma prevalence racial disparities, 2–19 year olds, 1988–2014

Abstract: NHB youth had a greater asthma prevalence increase from 1988-1994 to 2011-2014 than NHW youth. Most of the racial disparity in asthma prevalence remained unexplained after considering weight status and other characteristics.

“…The increased prevalence of allergic respiratory disease worldwide 13 is attributed in part to atopic women having more pregnancies resulting in live births than nonatopic women 4 as both successful pregnancy 5,6 and allergic diseas 7,8 are associated with a type 2 (T2) immune response endotype i.e., group 2 innate lymphoid/adaptive T helper 2 cell immune response 9,10 . The National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) is a cross-sectional survey representative of the U.S. population of women of reproductive age 11 .…”

“…Asthma is a common airway disorder with clusters of respiratory symptoms including recurrent episodes of coughing, shortness of breath, and dyspnea ( 1 ). Epidemiological investigation revealed that the incidence of asthma varies widely among different countries ranging from ~7 to 18% ( 2 ). Although its condition can be alleviated by inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) or by combined treatment with ICS and long-acting β-agonists (LABA) ( 3 ), there is no specific drug that can permanently prevent the recurrence of an asthma attack.…”

“…Asthma is a chronic airway disease associated with clusters of respiratory symptoms, including wheezing and dyspnea. Asthma is a common disease with different prevalences according to ethnicity that range from approximately 7% to 18.0% 1 . The incidence of asthma in the adult population (>20 years old) was estimated to be approximately 3.63–6.07 per 1,000 people in Korea 2 .…”
