Contribution to the knowledge of the Nolini of the Maputo Special Reserve in South Mozambique with description of two new species and several taxonomic updates (Lepidoptera, Nolidae, Nolinae)

Abstract: Present paper contains the first comprehensive summary of the Nolini species of the Maputo Special Reserve collected between November 2016 and February 2018. The Nolini fauna counts 21 species in total, 17 species are proved to be new for the fauna of Mozambique, two species are new to science and described here as Mecothrix maputuana sp. n. and Meganola shangaana sp. n. The subgenus Mecothrix Hacker, 2012 is upgraded to genus rank. Mecothrix cana Hacker, 2012 and Nola submelanoscelis Hacker, 2012 are downgrad… Show more

“…Three consecutive sampling expeditions were undertaken between 2016 and 2018 to create a comprehensive knowledge of the Lepidoptera fauna of the Maputo Special Reserve. This research has already produced publications on Tumicla (Lithosiini, Arctiinae, Erebidae) (Volynkin & László 2018), Nolini (Nolinae, Nolidae) (László & Vetina, 2019), Cossidae (Yakovlev et al 2020) Sphingidae (Bąkowski et al 2020), and Notodontidae (László et al 2021). This present paper aims to provide a first summary of the Limacodidae fauna of the Maputo Special Reserve based on the material collected between 2016 and 2018.…”

“…The reserve boasts rather diverse habitat types, harbouring a wide range of vegetation and endemic plants (Yakovlev et al 2020), and is considered a Biodiversity Hotspot by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund. The history of MSR is briefly summarised by László & Vetina (2019). The climate is subtropical, with a hot and rainy summer (September-April) and dry and cool winter (March-October) (Guldemond & van Aarde 2010).…”

“…A short reconnaissance trip was organised by the ANHRT and the MHNM in August of 2018 to Chimanimani National Reserve, Gorongosa National Park, Mount Mabu and Mount Namuli, with the aim of more comprehensive sampling efforts during the rains. A number of papers dealing with the results from these expeditions have been published (László & Vetina 2019;Yakovlev et al 2020;Volynkin & László 2018, with the present paper on the Sphingidae a further contribution to our knowledge of the lepidopteran fauna of Mozambique. Although the Sphingidae fauna of southern Africa is relatively well known (Pinhey 1962(Pinhey , 1979Mitchell 1973), very few publications dealing with the Mozambique fauna exist (Goldbach 1993; de Encarnação 2014).…”

“…More recently there have been a number of research papers to come out of MSR as a result of expeditions organised by the African Natural History Research Trust (ANHRT) in collaboration with the Museu De História Natural de Maputo. These include both checklists and new species descriptions for Lepidoptera belonging to the following families and subfamilies: Cossidae (Yakovlev et al, 2020), Erebidae: Arctiinae: (Volynkin & László, 2018;, Limacodidae (Taberer & László, 2022), Nolidae: Nolinae (László & Vetina, 2019), Notodontidae (László et al, 2021), Saturniidae and Eupterotidae (Takano & László, 2022), Sphingidae (Bakowski et al, 2020) and for the Mantodea (Miles, in prep. ).…”
