Contributions of Long-Range Transported and Locally Emitted Nitrate in Size-Segregated Aerosols in Japan at Kyushu and Okinawa

Abstract: We observed the size distributions of mass concentration, ionic composition, and trace metal concentration in aerosols collected at an urban site in Kumamoto Prefecture (KM) and a rural site at Cape Hedo in Okinawa Prefecture (HD) between 2012 and 2015. To evaluate the contribution of transboundary nitrate and locally emitted nitrate in the aerosols at Kumamoto, we distinguished between days of transboundary air pollution from East Asia and days of local air pollution on the basis of a threshold for Pb concent… Show more

“…The eluent was 1.8 mol L -1 Na 2 CO 3 /1.7 mmol L -1 NaHCO 3 for anions, and 18 mmol L -1 methanesulfonic acid for cations. The concentration of each ionic component (detection limit for each ion of 0.01 µg m -3 ) and element was calculated by subtracting the blank value (Yumoto et al, 2015;Taniguchi et al, 2017;Tatsuta et al, 2017;Shimada et al, 2017). The SO 4 2concentrations obtained from the 15 field campaigns are summarized in Fig.…”

“…The ions in the aerosols were analyzed by ion chromatography and metals were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The observation details of ions and metals conducted on CHAAMS are reported in the companion articles (Tatsuta et al, 2017;Taniguchi et al, 2017).…”

“…The location of CHAAMS is suitable for capturing the atmospheric pollutants via LRT, and has already revealed the behavior of aerosols affected by the LRT Takiguchi et al, 2008;Hatakeyama et al, 2011;Shimada et al, 2015). During the intensive observation ), which is mainly produced by the oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), was the dominant aerosol component at CHAAMS (Tatsuta et al, 2017).…”

“…The atmospheric diffusion capability is crucial in the regional transport of aerosols and greatly depends on meteorological conditions. Numerical simulations and the HYSPLIT trajectory method have been used extensively in pollution analysis and research [14][15][16][17][18][19]. Stein et al [20] detailed the historical evolution and recent improvements in HYSPLIT.…”
