In recent years, sustainability concerns have gained increasing attention among countries and stakeholders worldwide. Towards the transition to sustainable rural development, the rural web framework (RWF) has become a consistent tool. Indicators from the RWF have been used to explore sustainable rural development for decision-making tasks, which improves the social, economic, and environmental performance of rural regions. However, the application of the RWF in studies is on the decline. Furthermore, there is a lack of literature reviews on the importance of the RWF and its relationship with different facets of sustainable development. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) (a) to explore how studies have used the RWF in the context of sustainable development and (b) to identify areas for further research. This study found that the RWF has mostly been used in developed countries, with fewer applications in developing countries. We suggest that there should be increased application of the RWF, particularly in developing countries, to broaden the rural web–sustainable development discourse and its relevance. This paper presents several areas where the indicators of the RWF can be applied to illustrate their relevance for policy decisions towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Marketing is very important in milk and dairy products, which are a product group with a perishable quality. It is known that women farmers play an important role in ensuring food security and safety in our country, where small family businesses are common in milk production. Women farmers play an important role in the marketing of milk and dairy products obtained from the milk they process in periodic markets and make significant contributions to the family economy. In this study, it was aimed to determine the socio-economic characteristics, farming structures, farming and marketing problems of women farmers who market milk and dairy products in the periodic markets established in the city center of Isparta. For this purpose, the data obtained by conducting a survey with 74 women farmers who market open milk and dairy products in the periodic markets established in the city center of Isparta were analyzed. According to the findings of the research, the average number of cattle is 7.36 heads, the average number of milked cows is 6.81 heads, the average time worked to produce dairy products is 2.59 hours/day, and the average amount of milk produced is 56.42 kg/farm. It has been determined that 87.80% of the farm is milked by machine and 59.46% have closed barn type. It has been determined that 93.20% of the producers sell open milk in the market. It has been determined that 50% of the producers use the money they earn in purchasing animal feed. It has been determined that the most important problem faced by the producers in the market is the problem of finding a place (18.90%). Safe food production includes not only the production phase but also the marketing process of the product. For this reason, it is important to review the marketing of milk and dairy products, which are traditionally marketed in periodic markets in Isparta, in terms of food safety and to improve the marketing conditions of women farmers.

Sustainable development involves multi‐level, multi‐actor and multi‐faceted processes and interrelations for which, ideally, comprehensive theoretical frameworks are required to understand the nature, dynamics and heterogeneity of changes generating greater sustainability in rural areas. Studies have utilised the rural web framework to explain these processes and interactions, but its application is lacking in sub‐Saharan Africa. This study addresses the gap in the literature by using the framework to (1) explore sustainable development indicators and (2) evaluate their socioeconomic determinants based on a questionnaire survey with data collected from 600 rural households in Ghana. Additionally, formal interviews were conducted with 60 participants, comprising village leaders, not‐for‐profit organisations and officers from municipal assemblies. This research shows that endogeneity, novelty production, and sustainability indicators describe rural regions as agriculturally diversified economies. Several factors contribute significantly to agricultural diversification, including social relationships, social groups, market participation, and the presence of migrants. These findings have implications for achieving two of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SDG 1 (zero poverty) and SDG 2 (zero hunger), as they highlight the benefits of social and economic linkages between rural and urban areas within the context of agricultural production, exchange of resources and the mitigation of accessibility barriers to resources. We suggest that policies seeking to increase agricultural diversification, food security and achieve sustainable rural development should strengthen social relationships and institutional structures, increase market opportunities, assist farmers with organic certifications and bridge the rural–urban development gap.
