Contributions to the knowledge of amphibians and reptiles from Volta Grande do Xingu, northern Brazil

Abstract: The region of Volta Grande do Xingu River, in the state of Pará, presents several kinds of land use ranging from extensive cattle farming to agroforestry, and deforestation. Currently, the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant affects the region. We present a checklist of amphibians and reptiles of the region and discuss information regarding the spatial distribution of the assemblies based on results of Environmental Programmes conducted in the area. We listed 109 amphibian (Anura, Caudata, and Gymnophiona) an… Show more

“…As far as we know, Pristimantis latro sp. n. represents the first species described to the south of the Amazon River in Pará State, where it was erroneously identified as P. fenestratus due to their morphological similarities (Oliveira et al 2013, Vaz-Silva et al 2015). …”

“…The anuran fauna corresponded to 65.7 % of the recorded species for the Tumucumaque Mountains National Park (Lima 2008), 86.9 % of the species found in the River Cajari Extractive Reserve (Queiroz et al 2011), 60.9 % species recorded during the surveys conducted of the Rio Curiaú Environmental Protection Area (Lima et al 2017), and 90.6 % species of anurans recorded in the Amapá National Forest (Bemício and Lima 2017). This high anurans richness for the Amazonian biome is highly underestimated considering taxonomic problems, recent descriptions of species and taxonomic revisions (Peloso et al 2014; Vaz-Silva et al 2015). …”

“…The main hypotheses proposed to explain barrier formation separating populations and causing the differentiation of species in Amazonia during the course of geological history are based on different factors (Haffer 2008). According the river hypothesis, rivers may play a major role in creating and maintaining high levels of spatial separation of populations (Vaz-Silva et al 2015). …”

“…Although some studies of Amazonian herpetofauna have been conducted in places far from urban centers (e.g. Frota et al 2005, Prudente & Santos-Costa 2005, Bernarde et al 2006, Turci et al 2008, França & Venancio 2010, Ferrão et al 2012, Pantoja & Fraga 2012, Santos-Costa 2015, Vaz-Silva et al 2015, Rodrigues et al 2016, França et al 2017, Fonseca et al 2019, for example there is a sampling bias in favor of densely populated areas as shown for plants (Nelson et al 1990).…”
