Megawatt scale wind turbines have become the unit of choice in commercial wind farms. Throughout the world wind energy penetration levels continue to rise with many countries having installed wind farm nameplate capacity in excess of ten percent of the national grid. This paper presents an analytical model of a two megawatt permanent magnet synchronous generator directly connected to the wind turbine rotor shaft. Directly connected permanent magnet generators with full scale AC-DC-AC controllers have found favor within the industry because of their lower maintenance and manufacturing costs and ease of grid integration. This paper will present a full analytical model of the wind turbine and the AC-DC-AC controller connected to a stiff utility grid along with their solutions in the time domain. Space vector modulation is utilized for gating the power electronics devices.

This study presents a control strategy for a Squirrel Cage Induction Generator (SCIG)-based wind energy conversion system. Control strategies of the AC/DC/AC converter is presented along with the mathematical modeling of the employed configuration. The maximum power point extraction of the wind turbine is addressed along with the proposed strategy. The backstepping approach is introduced to control the generator speed and regulate the flux. The wind system is then simulated in MATLAB-SIMULINK and the developed model is used to illustrate the behavior of the system. The simulation results are presented and discussed at the end of this study.

Wind energy as a renewable energy source continues to be a better alternative to fossil-fuel based generation due to its low cost and environmental benefits. While considerable research efforts have been focused on modeling and control of grid connected variable speed squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) wind energy conversion systems (WECS), comprehensive models for grid integration studies have been almost non-existent. This paper presents the detail modeling, control and analysis of a grid-connected 2.25-MW variable speed SCIG based WECS that can be utilized for grid integration studies. The presented WECS model consists of a pitch regulated wind turbine connected to a SCIG through a gear box. Then, a full-capacity power electronic converter with maximum power point tracking (MPPT), dc bus voltage regulation and power factor correction, connects the SCIG to the grid. The power converter system comprises of back to back two-level voltage source converters linked through a dc-link capacitor. The generator and grid-side converters are controlled using indirect rotor field-oriented control (IR-FOC) and voltage-oriented control (VOC) respectively. The overall system is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink for a varying wind speed. Results show that the presented model is adequate and efficient in the representation of a variable speed SCIG WECS. In addition, the model meets all of the system performance objectives while simultaneously meeting all of the control objectives.
