Control of Amount of α-Al Phase Particles in near Eutectic Al-Si Alloy by Electromagnetic Stirring

Abstract: Al-Si alloy is widely used as a casting alloy. The α-Al phase in the semi-solid state has low Si content in the Al-Si alloy. Then by separation of these α-Al phases from semi-solid Al-Si alloy, refining of aluminum can be possible. But, in near eutectic Al-Si alloy, few primary α-Al phases can be crystallized. If the fraction ratio of the α-Al phase can be increased, near eutectic Al-Si alloy can refine, and this method can be used for recycling. In this study, the effect of electromagnetic stirring (EMS) on t… Show more

“…Removed by ECS the yield of primary crystals achieved using the conventional method was only ³10%. 17) The silicon concentration in the obtained primary crystals was ³1.5%, and recycled ingots produced from the obtained solid phase could be used as a component of A6000 series alloys for wrought materials.…”

“…In other words, SSM processing is not only temperature dependent, but also time-dependent. It is also demonstrated by Al-Si eutectic alloy to form semi-solid slurry for rheocasting because the thermal arrest during solidification, induces the decoupled crystal growth between silicon and aluminium under convection [220,224].…”
