Control of an Ultrahigh-Speed Centrifugal Compressor for the Air Management of Fuel Cell Systems

Abstract: Fuel cell is a power supply system, which takes advantage of the electro-chemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen to produce electricity with water as its byproduct. Due to their lower pollution and high efficiency compared with fossil fuels, fuel cell systems are under extensive development for many power applications. Compared with high temperature fuel cells (such as molten carbonate fuel cells or solid oxide fuel cells), the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is more suitable for automotive ap… Show more

“…The outlet pressure in scenario 3 is at a higher level than other types of compressors applied to PEM fuel cell systems. 37 , 38 Higher outlet pressure could lead to a lower volumetric efficiency and higher energy consumption. As indicated in the work, 34 volumetric efficiency of a compressor decreased from 66.7 to 51.0% when the outlet pressure increased from 3.0 to 10 bar.…”

“…The use of aerodynamic bearings expands progressively to domains where the ambient conditions cannot be satisfactorily conditioned, either due to economical or to technical reasons. In particular, gas bearing-supported pressurizers of Proton-Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells [1,2,3] for automotive applications are subject to a large range of ambient temperatures and relative humidities. Thus, the knowledge of the effect of ambient humidity on the performance of an aerodynamic bearing is necessary to ensure the viability of a given design.…”

“…9 Therefore, the air supply system is one of the key points for improving efficiency of the overall fuel cell system (FCS) and saving cost. 10 Various types of compressors have been studied, such as scroll compressors, 11 screw compressors, 12 variable-delivery piston compressors, 13 centrifugal compressors, 14,15 and roots compressors. 16 Also, several new technical innovations have been developed, such as the toroidal intersecting vane machine (TIVM).…”
