Control of Biodegradability Under Composting Conditions and Physical Performance of Poly (Lactic Acid) Based Materials Modified with Phenolic-Free Rosin Resin

Abstract: Biodegradable materials based on poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and a phenolic free modified rosin resin were obtained and studied to control the biodegradability under composting conditions of the materials. The resin was blended in concentrations of 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 parts per hundred (phr) of base polymer using industrial plastic processing techniques. Additionally, to study the effect of the resin on the compatibility of the PLA, the physical performance, water absorption, mechanical behavior, thermal stabilit… Show more

“…UP resin derivative was cracked into small fragments (average size 2 mm in diameter). The UP resin grains were blended with the different PLA grades in a concentration of 3 parts per hundred resins (phr), which was previously found to be the maximum quantity of UP resin e cient to enhance PLA performance before saturation [17]. Formulation labeling is indicated in Table 2.…”

“…Therefore, rosin fraction can be encompassed in polymers as side chains or backbones by functionalizing the carboxyl group of rosin acids. [14][15][16][17][18][19] Several authors have embedded rosin with various compounds such as polyethylenglycol (PEG) to obtain PEGrosin derivative for water soluble rosin flux, 20 cellulose nanofiber as a reinforcing and co-antimicrobial agents in polylactic acid/chitosan composite film for food packaging 21 and degradable rosin-ester-caprolactone graft copolymers. 22 Most of the processes applied to enhance rosin grafting to other compounds used chemicals and solvents, while ultrasonic waves considering as "green chemistry" offers not only a good alternative to these toxic elements, but also lowers energy use, speeds up the polymerization reaction as an external catalyst and enhanced product selectivity.…”

“…PLA is highly transparent but rigid with low permeability, while PCL lacks transparency but exhibits flexibility and strength De la Rosa-Ramírez et al (2023). Combining these two polymers yields a composite that addresses the shortcomings of each component.…”
