Control of Nitrosamines, THMs, and HAAs in Heavily Impacted Water with O3‐BAC

Abstract: Comprehensive control of regulated trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), as well as nitrosamines, is needed to address forthcoming regulations. The formation potentials (FPs) of these disinfection by‐products (DBPs) with chlorination (Cl2) and chloramination (NH2Cl) were investigated along the treatment train of a conventional and ozone‐biologically active carbon (O3‐BAC) process. The nitrosamines FP‐NH2Cl, THM FP‐Cl2, and HAA FP‐Cl2 in heavily impacted source water in China were as high as 333 n… Show more

“…Ozone is important to achieving the desirable high CMF fluxes, but clearly its impact to form NDMA is more critical than chloramine which may be used to control RO membrane biofouling. Oxidation is known to greatly reduce the potential for NDMA formation in drinking water application [45] however ozone also induces NDMA formation when applied to wastewater. 7 out of 8 wastewater treatment plants surveyed for DBP formation associated an increase in NDMA as a result of the ozonation stage [46].…”

“…On the basis of the results of our pilot and field studies, we analyzed the performance of each process for removing organic matter (Table ). The results revealed that a combination of conventional and O 3 –BAC processes enables integrated removal of several organic materials, including bulk organic matter, DBPs, and biostability issues. …”

“…We developed a sequential chlorination process with short-term free chlorination and subsequent chloramination . Besides effectively inactivating micro-organisms, this method could also reduce THM and HAA yields or nitrosamine yield when compared with free chlorination or chloramination …”

“…When the human impact is something like eutrophication or urbanization, more complex characterization of the DOM may be necessary. Typically, the most difficult to remove DOM is colorless and hydrophilic from algal and microbially-derived DOM produced within aquatic ecosystems (Liao et al 2017), rather than the darker DOM that is of terrestrial origin (Golea et al 2017;Lavonen et al 2013;Yang et al 2015). During algal blooms, in systems with higher levels of autochthonous DOM (i.e., low SUVA), and/or with chloramine treatments, N-containing and regulated by-products can be produced above what are considered safe levels even when ambient DOC are low (e.g., Golea et al 2017;Lavonen et al 2013;Liao et al 2017;Yang et al 2015).…”
