“…Yates & Urquhart (1962) supported this concept of a biological feed-back mechanism and proposed that the corticoids exerted their depressant action at the hypothalamic level. These observations are also dependent upon the hypothesis as summarized by Vogt (1960) that variations of glucocorticoid secretion from the adrenal gland are entirely controlled by changes in the rate of secretion of ACTH from the pituitary.…”

“…DISCUSSION Vogt (1943) established that the adrenal gland secreted large amounts of cortical hormones but did not store them. Therefore it has generally been accepted that the ability of the pituitary gland to secrete ACTH governs the adrenal responsiveness to secrete corticoids to the peripheral tissues (Vogt, 1960;Yates & Urquhart, 1962). The corticosterone concentration in the adrenal glands of rats has been shown to increase severalfold in response to exsanguination under ether and shortly following injection of ACTH, histamine or adrenaline (Holzbauer, 1957).…”

“…They therefore proposed the variable set point control theory (15,16). Smelik however opposed the theory and proposed that only a supraphysiolo gical concentration of the corticoids had an inhibitory effect on acute release of cortico tropin (17).…”
