“…43 When this concept is extended to wearable devices, PEMF therapy may be seen as an adjunct to pain medication with a view to improving pain relief, reducing the need for painkillers in order to contain side effects, or both. 1 The adverse effects of opiate-based drugs, acetaminophen, and NSAIDs have been well documented. Opiates are associated with postoperative nausea and vomiting, urinary retention, ileus, constipation, and sedation, and acetaminophen and NSAIDs can cause hepatic and renal toxicity, coagulation, confusion, sedation, and dizziness.…”

“…No side effects have been reported. 1,3,4 Several studies have tried to analyze the mechanisms of action behind PEMF therapy. [5][6][7][8][9][10] The treatment alters the electrochemical balance in the cell membrane and interacts with biologic transduction mechanisms.…”

“…One such alternative is the ActiPatch, which is a commercially available medical device in the UK, Canada and parts of Europe that uses pulsed shortwave therapy (PSWT) [25] to provide relief from chronic pain [26,27]. Randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled studies that utilized the ActiPatch indicate clinically significant decreases in pain, along with a decrease in the use of medication [26][27][28]. For example, in a 4-week study investigating osteoarthritis of the knee [26], 26% of subjects in the ActiPatch treatment group stopped the use of prescribed analgesics, mainly NSAIDs, while 0% added a new therapy for pain management.…”
