Control of the Nano-Particle Weight Ratio in Stainless Steel Micro and Nano Powders by Radio Frequency Plasma Treatment

Abstract: This study describes how to make stainless steel hybrid micro-nano-powders (a mixture of micro-powder and nano-powder) using an in situ one-step process via radio frequency (RF) thermal plasma treatment. Nano-particles attached to micro-powders were successfully prepared by RF thermal plasma treatment of stainless steel powder with an average size of 35 μm. The ratio of nano-powders is estimated with a two-dimensional fluid simulation that calculates the temperature profile influencing the rate of surface evap… Show more

“…The results confirm that the polymer of natural origin PHBV can successfully replace polypropylene, maintaining similar rheological properties and better maximum volume fraction of metallic powder [199]. The analysis of the optimal binder formulation was also addressed by Ibrahim et al [200] and Yang et al [201]. Then, using metal-IM technology, a porous titanium filter media was obtained.…”

“…As an example of a specific application, the generation of hybrid micro-nanopowders are required for metal injection molding using in situ one-step processes via RF thermal plasma treatment. 243) One of the nanopowder generators is to utilize thermal plasmas generated by a RF-ICP torch. Figure 28 shows the growth process of the nanoparticles from microscale macroparticles.…”

“…Over the last few decades, thermal plasma technology has attracted wide attention in synthesizing ultra-fine powders through gas-phase reaction due to its high temperature, high enthalpy, high quenching rate, clean reaction atmosphere, and wide range of controllable conditions [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. Compared with DC plasma, radio frequency (RF) plasma has advantages such as a cleaner reaction atmosphere, higher energy, a larger reaction chamber, and being more suitable for synthesizing high-purity materials because of no electrode contamination.…”
