Control of water weeds by grass carp in two small lakes

Abstract: Chinese grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.), 4-6 years old and weighing more than 2 kg, were incrementally stocked over a 3 year period at rates between 14 and 218 kg. ha -1 in two small lakes. Preferential consumption of plants was recorded at low stocking densities; the aquatic species Potamogeton ochreatus and the emergent species Eleocharis sphacelata were the most palatable plants in the two lakes. Virtual elimination of Potamogeton ochreatus, Eleocharis sphacelata, Egeria densa, and Nitella hookeri… Show more

“…As a native or naturalized component of a system, E. densa may eventually auto-catalyze a shift from a clear water to a turbid water state as it builds sediment in shallow areas. Furthermore, the mono-specific nature of many E. densa stands exhibit vulnerability to the impact of allogenic ecosystem engineers such as carp or crayfish (Mitchell 1980, Matsuzaki et al 2009 …”

“…Trout caught during the previous summer tended to be mainly in the vicinity of steep drop-offs, closer to deeper water (Sectors E and F). Here, the extensive weed beds present at that time (Mitchell 1980) would have provided cover for the trout.…”

“…Measurements of macrophyte biomass in New Zealand lakes have been few and restricted either to total communities without species separation (Dromgoole & Brown 1976;Mitchell 1980) or to stands dominated by one species, for example Isoetes alpinus Kirk and Elodea canadensis Michx.…”
